Welcome to the sewanee wetland research station

The Sewanee Wetland Research Station began as a collaboration between Sewanee: The University of the South and the Odum School of Ecology at the University of Georgia. Located on the edge of the Cumberland Plateau, our wetlands serves as both as a research station and a functioning waste-water treatment facility for the Sewanee Utility District.

We began this project with two original goals:

1. To monitor the effectiveness of wetlands in treating wastewater in a rural context

2. To educate community members on how these innovative treatment systems work

These goals continue to shape the direction of our ever evolving research. The longevity of this project is a testament to our commitment to sustainability, student research, and community engagement!
